This special chair was mainly a folding chair we believe was used by philosophers and artisans. A very similar chair to this one was known as the klismos and it had a curved back and curved legs. Most people still see it as the most beautiful chair ever. While this particular chair also disappeared for some centuries, it made a comeback during the 18th century in Europe. At this point, manufacturers used statues and ancient murals.

The truth is that the first chair to be reproduced widely came from Renaissance Italy, when a cabinet maker named Guise PPE Gaetano Descalzi, who lived in the city of Chiavari, was commissioned by the Marquis Stefano Rivarola to redesign an opulent Empire-Style chair he acquired from Paris.

While this happened before the Industrial Revolution, the truth is that they were produced in sufficient quantity that they began making their way into mainstream society. Today, this type of chair is known as banquet chairs and they were the first ones to be seen out of Aristocrats’ homes.
