Office Chair Sinking – How To Fix It?

Just like any product or item that you buy, office chairs also tend to get some problems after some years of use. The truth is that the more use you give to an office chair and the cheap the office chair is, the sooner you will notice them. Nevertheless, they are quite normal and unless there are any serious problems with the office chair, you may end up solving these problems by yourself and without spending a lot of money. And this is exactly what happens when you notice your office chair sinking.

Have you ever noticed that whenever you are sitting down, the office chair simply sinks? It really doesn’t matter if you just adjusted the seat height or if you did it a year ago.

In case you don’t know, one of the most common causes for the office chair sinking is related to the pneumatic cylinder. When you are searching for a new office chair, you probably already noticed that most of them allow you to adjust the seat height using the pneumatic cylinder. So, with time and use, it is normal that the office chair starts sinking since the seals are just too damaged to maintain pressure.

When you notice your office chair sinking, you have two options: you can buy a replacement cylinder, which can be expensive depending on the chair that you have,  or you can try to make the office chair work by yourself.

In case you want to solve the office chair sinking by yourself, all you need to do is to follow the next steps:

Step #1: Slide The Plastic:

In order to start, it is better to turn the office chair upside down. Now that you can see the wheels, you will be able to notice a plastic skirt. Just try to pull it up or down so that you can see the actual cylinder.

Step #2: Adjust The Height:

One of the cons of fixing the office chair sinking on your own is that you won’t be able to change the office chair seat height again in the future. So, you want to ensure that you have the office chair at the right height for you to use it.

In case your office chair is already sinking even if you are not sitting on it, just lay it on its side to measure the height that you want for the seat to be.

Step #3: Use A Hose Clamp:

In order to secure the office chair cylinder at the height that you want, you will need to use a hose clamp around it. One of the hose clamps that tend to work better have 2 cm and are also known as Jubilee Clip. So, in case you don’t have any of these at home, just go to the nearest hardware store that they have it for sure.

In order to use the hose clamp, you will need to first loose its screw and pull out the belt end. Then, just wrap it around the cylinder of the office chair but don’t tighten it yet.

This is how you should clean a leather office chair.

Step #4: The Grip Of The Clamp:

While this step isn’t required, we believe that you should consider doing it. After all, with a better grip, the clamp will be tighter and more secured making your office chair last for a longer time.

So, all you need to do is to wrap a couple of layers of duct tape or a strip of rubber around the cylinder. By doing this, you are giving the hose clamp a better surface to grip. You should do this at the highest point of the cylinder that is visible.

In case you notice that the cylinder is dirty or that it has some grease, you should make sure to clean it well first so that the duct tape or rubber can easily adhere.

Step #5: Tighten The Clamp:

As soon as you place the duct tape or the strip of rubber around the cylinder, you need to work fast. Just tighten the hose clamp as fast as you can as well as it should be as fas as possible. All you need to do is to rotate the screw.

The final step is to test the office chair. As you sit on it, the chair shouldn’t be able to go any lower than the clamp you placed. In case it does or if the office chair isn’t at the height that you wanted, just move the hose clamp up or down until you put it on the right position.
